ALBRIGHTON & DISTRICT CIVIC SOCIETY (ADCS)

(Albrighton, Boningale, Donington-with-Boscobel and Tong)

Civic Society Public Meeting and AGM 8th October 2018
Many thanks to the approximately 150 people who attended our meeting.

The main items were to hear from David Corden who chairs the newly established Albrighton Flood Action Group followed by Hugh Dannatt from Shropshire Council who spoke about the Flood of 27th May and what is being done about it. This was followed by many residents’ questions.
Rod Smith then updated everyone about the two Developments East of Shaw Lane. While Boningale Homes had said at our AGM last October that building would start in September 2018 nothing has happened except that the frontage on Kingswood Road has lost its trees and is an eyesore. Jessup had its first Planning Application for the north part of the site deferred in March 2018. It was considered again by the South Planning Committee of Shropshire Council in June and this time the significant efforts of the Albrighton Developments Action Group, established by the Civic Society, managed to get a unanimous refusal by the whole planning committee. Jessup has until January 2019 to appeal. Meanwhile he has submitted another Planning Application exactly as before but without the land where the enormous Care Apartments Building was located. This Application still has the proposed vehicle access to/from Shaw Lane and the drainage connected into the sewer in Shaw Lane as before – both of which are ridiculous and to which we object. The planning committee is likely to hear this Application on 20th November but we wait for confirmation of the date. We will publicise the actual date when known. We need as many residents as possible to come to Shire Hall to support our local speakers who will again speak against the Application and a new Action Group Report will be submitted to the committee. Some residents have said they feel this is a cynical way for Jessup to proceed by now submitting a slightly reduced Application and then expecting to follow up with another Application for the land where the Extra Care Apartments were located. Watch this space.
Jo Baugh then explained the future plans for use of the Red House which is aiming to be and is already becoming the centre of village life and showed examples of the many activities being carried out there. The Civic Society had obtained a grant for us to buy our own microphones/speakers public address system as we had had problems previously with the old system at the Red House. However after discussions with the Red House we donated our grant to the Red House for them to add to their funds and a completely new PA system has been purchased and is now in operation as we saw and heard at our meeting – this is a big improvement for the village and one which needs to be looked after.
We were very pleased to then welcome Dave Fitton of Albrighton First Responders who explained and demonstrated how to use a defibrillator - there are three in the village. His explanations took away some of the mystery of the machine and showed how it is easy and safe to use and that it has its own built-in safeguards. Several people said that after his excellent presentation they would now be more confident to use the system. His brief demonstration to the vast number in the hall was not intended to be a proper training course but we hope that it provided a taster and encouragement for residents to attend formal training. We hope that some formal training sessions may be set up for smaller groups of residents so that as many people as possible could have practical hands-on experience in the use of this life saving equipment.

We thank all who came to the meeting and especially all speakers who gave their time.
